Unfortunately our time in China is coming to a close. China has been an amazing experience and I think I’m speaking for everyone when I say that this trip has changed all of us for the better. Dr. Semegon and Dr. Darby told us that we would not come back from China the same person we were when we left, and they were right. All of us have become much more rounded individuals because of our experiences here in China.
Since today was our last day in Shanghai we had a free a day. People used the day as an opportunity to sleep in and get a jump-start on packing. Jen and I spend the day in Tianzifang shopping. We went up and down the streets, exploring the tiny little shops, and buying souvenirs for our friends and family. After shopping, Jen and I treated ourselves to a meal of pizza and French fries (it was delicious), and then headed back to the hotel to pack.
The Asia institute hosted a farewell dinner for us tonight. They put together an adorable slide show recapping our time in China. We watched the slideshow before dinner and then a movie after which featured special messages from Lucy and Tom (our beloved PC’s). The videos did a great job of capturing all of the good times that we shared together over these past couple weeks. After we watched the videos some people made short speeches about their time in China, which brought most of us to tears (except Dr. Darby). It was a great way to spend our last night.
After dinner some of us went to the Bund and took in the beauty of Shanghai one last time. But now, I’m lying in bed dreading the alarm that will go off in a few hours that will officially bring our time in China to an end. We have a long day of traveling ahead of us and I am not looking forward to it.
We made it home safely! The Flagler College study abroad group is now officially back in America. After three flights I’m sure we are all so excited to be at home sleeping in our own beds. I’m happy to be home but I know I’m going to miss China and spending every day with the wonderful people I have been surrounded by the past couple weeks. I am so grateful for the time I spent in China, and all of the friends I have made. I learned something from every person on this trip, and made lifelong friends. My only regret about this trip is that I only bought one bag of ginger candy.
